What aspect of the Blackbird would you change

Postby Simon S » Sat Jan 24, 2004 10:12 am

Ok the xx is a good machine, but all machines can be improved on :wink)
Underseat exhausts?
Single sided swingarm 8)
Rid it of the linked brakes :)
Bigger engine :D
Clear front indicators :oops)

Nothing needs to be changed on my machine. The rider on the otherhand (me) could do with more advanced training to fully appreciate this wonderful machine's more than capable attributes.
However saying that there are some (what I think are) cool changes to be taking place quite soon now on my Blackie and pics will be posted.

We've run this thread before I think :?

With Ladybird on the Lighter version but also I'd like a Gear indicator and a warning light on the fuel gauge instead of the little red square that doesn't really alert you.

And I'm also with Jism on the Stealth mode, but I'd add FREE road tax FREE insurance and FREE petrol for the life of the motorcycle if a Policeman looks at it in the wrong way when you're NOT in Stealth mode :D

Zorsts are fine - plenty to polish and why hide them away :? I don't mind the linked brakes, but the clear lenses is a nice touch 8)

And finally, YES BA - advanced training for this rider too, but how about this for a little touch - automatically lowered suspension when coming to a standstill so those with little legs can get something other than rubber on the floor

I think that you have to look at what everyone does to their bbs, such as seats, fender extenders, huggers etc for what the bb could do with 'out of the showroom' everything else is really just cosmetic, and as I've got the bus now, who am I to comment on cometic apearences :D

Reduce the price by making them in one colour only - RED!

Seriously, as with most other bikes, I think that Fender Extenders and Huggers should be standard on Sports Tourers.

Only other thing that I would add to the list would be a better headlight. Tip the 'bird into a corner at night at a reasonable speed and you end up hoping that your memory of the bend was good and no-one's left an un-lit skip on the road.

I followed a thread on the old forum which went into the problem of headlights and corners, and it suggested measuring the beam height above ground from a certain distance, then increase the height to a specified height, then apparently it gives a better pattern through the bends without blinding other drivers - I tried it and I just kept getting flashed at - but then again the xx does have this habit of lighting up the sky under power anyway :D

If you're interested in it Trident, I'm sure I printed it off, so I'll have a look and see if I can find the link (or the full article if you prefer) - might be one for your little techie section :?

On further reflection, I agree with BH. Front suspension is really Low Tech for such a fine machine.
I don't know if ,so called upsideown forks are absolutely necessary but variable two-way damping I consider should be standard.

The same applies to the rear suspension.

I am accustomed to Motocross bikes where you can vary the front by
Oil Viscosity
Oil Level
Alternative Springs
Variable Compression Damping
Variable Rebound Damping

The Rear by
Variable Pre-Load
Variable Compression Damping
Variable Rebound Damping

My '99 Honda CR has also "High Speed" variable Comppression Damping to compensate for big bumps or landing hard.
All on a bike which cost about 3500 pounds new.

Everybody finds they need different setting for optimum performance according to their needs.

I am not saying the xx should need such fine tuning but as a class leader, it should be a little bit better appointed suspension wise.

On the other hand, the xx is like a tennis racqet, you can just take it and use it as it is meant to be used.

lighter without sacrificing the counterbalancers

stiffer spring(s) front and rear

exhaust has got to go...a little lame

switch to turn on and off CBS, but front forks need stiffer springs along with this one. I don't mind the linked brakes when coming down off warp speed

decrease rake angle a degree or two, but not if it would make the beast wobble at 299kph (otherwise I'd have to spend money on a damper)

Zigster - one of the things which really sold me on the xx in the first place was the zorsts - and the sexy Silver paintwork too :D
