'Bird Running Hot...

Postby Dark Angel » Sun Mar 13, 2016 10:11 pm

...Hi All...

...I've got a 2005 Honda Blackbird XX1100cc Sports Tourer - (1137cc, actually - it says so in the book).

..When I stopped for twenty minutes at a red light today, the bike's temperature shot up to 100 degrees C.

I was a little concerned as that hasn't happened since last summer...

...My understanding is that the BB was once the most powerful production machine on the planet, but are these
speeds while stationary at traffic signals harmful to the bike at all?

I use semi-synthetic, by the way - just so you know...

...Any advice on this over-boiling problem would be much appreciated.

Just to compound the problems I'm having, I fitted some Pirelli Angel GT tyres (I think)...

...instead of my usual Michelin Carriageway Public Relationship 3's...

...Is that wrong...?

PS I also fitted a new rear shock absorber recently...

...Should the spring be at the top - or at the bottom (assuming the bike is "right-side-up")?

Thanks in advance...

"Worried" of Lancs.

:thumbsup)

Hi Mr Dark Angel, (And any other `Bird owners, whose bikes run a little hot)(I hope this reply doesn`t sound condescending, only trying to be helpful !) I don`t know which coolant you`re currently using, but, you might want to change it. Because for the past 18 months, I`ve been using "Halfords" OAT (Organic acid technology) ready mixed antifreeze. (It`s pink !)(and has a pink label !) It`s also silicate free, and is recommended for aluminium motorcycle engines. It`s also got good anti corrosive properties. I use my `Bird daily, and, since changing from the old "green stuff", I`ve never had any overheating probs`, in fact, my `Bird seems to run cooler, (according to my temp` gauge), even on hot summer days. So, if your not already using this type of coolant, I`d recommend you get some in. (or something very similar) If you are already using this type of coolant, then you might have a blockage in the engine cooling system, which you`ll need to get sorted.) (is your electric fan working properly ?) (Also, DON`T use tap water, when "topping up", or self- mixing the "green" anti freeze. It`s too corrosive to engines ! Distilled water is best for all engines !) :thumbsup) Hope this helps, Regards, Sircular.

Thanks for your advice, Mr Sircular.

Having given this some serious thought, I've decided to lay the 'Bird up for the summer - I can't afford to
push the bike too hard and I certainly don't want to damage the engine as that would mean "Public Transport" for work. :shock)

I'll just use my old Suzuki GSXR 750cc Sports bike for now - at least, until the weather cools down again. :thumbsup)

If youre stopped that long then your temp will skyrocket ffs' s :roll)

I still have nightmares of me and Barsteward gridlocked on the Birds in fekkin Laaandan. Spent literally hours stuck. Barstewards FI was on the boil, the fan was on overtime. Turned the engine off at one stage and lo and behold the battery had run down. Bump starting a Honda Blackbird in London streets full of cnuts in cars is NOT very funny.

Check the radiator fins....if theyre blocked up with spattered shite then that will reduce the radiator efficiency. Next time you change coolant take on board Sircular's recommendation, I know I will next time.

May even treat t'owd girl to a new rad........they're as cheap as chips now on ebay.

:thumbsup)

Hi Guys, I also looked at using the "Evans waterless coolant", and, after looking at numerous reviews/posts (On other forums), it seems the evans stuff runs HOTTER than regular coolant.( And I thought the idea was to reduce our `bikes engine temp` ?) That`s why I went with Halfrauds OAT pre-mixed. Don`t let me stop you`s from using the evans stuff, if you feel the need, but I`m steering clear. Regards, Sircular.

Hi Guys, Sircular hear again, (Might be opening "A can of worms" here ?) Check out :- http://www.norosion.com/evanstest.htm. I realise they`re bias towards their own product, but, it makes interesting reading, and it`s where I found out about how the Evans stuff runs hotter. Which means, unless you change the Bird`s ECU, (or change your fan to a manual switch) your fan runs constantly ! ( Is it poss` to get a B/bird ECU with different temp` settings ?)(or change your current one`s temp` settings ?) That was enough to deter me ! Let alone the part about excess corrosion on aluminium, and less flow through the system, more strain on OEM water pumps, etc`. Also, the cost of the Evans coolant, plus the Evans conversion fluid, (Coz you `ave to remove 97 percent of your old coolant, otherwise the Evans stuff becomes corrosive !) Plus another ECU (If you can get one ?) In my opinion, that`s a lot of money/hassle, compared to just getting the Halfrauds OAT stuff. Anyway, that`s just my take on the subject. Have a look for yourselves, and make up your own minds. You could also consider using the "Norosion" stuff. (If it`s available in the U.K.?) I didn`t go down that particular road tho`. AND, you may like to look at a product called "Engine Ice" (Just to put a cat among the pigeons duh ) Regards, Sircular :thumbsup)

Just checked and already using Halfrauds.
Anyrode, its all getting a bit complicated, deep and "Snake-Oily" if you ask me.

A but of good , normal, old preventative maint and servicing is all thats required, n'er mind all this Mrs Evans' Virgin Daughters fanny batter and all that. screwy
