When I was a kid, the milkman used to deliver milk to our doorstep.

The coalman used to arrive with his wagon and fill our “coal hole” by heaving and carrying heavy sacks
on his shoulders to do so. Local shops would deliver to our door in the very early morning so no-one missed
breakfast. Paperboys got up early, too, to make deliveries before school.

As far as I can recall, the bin men were the ones who introduced the “tradition” of knocking on your door
at Christmas time to let you know that they’d done the job they were paid to do in the first instance.
They did this in full expectation of a cash-in-hand reward from their clients and the inference was –
“Pay, but only if if you want your bin emptied “carefully”, without “accidental” spillages”.

A few minutes ago I heard a bin man complaining to his colleague: “Why should we have to drag these out?"
(the plastic roller bins).

They arrive, chauffeur-driven and have to walk a grand total of perhaps twenty yards to collect the bins, place
them on a machine that lifts and empties them – then leave them where they are, in the street, to be collected
by those to whom they belong.

This – to them – is hard work.

So hard that they sometimes don’t get finished till 10 am!

Well:

as far as I’m concerned, the bin men can go fook ‘emselves.

Rant over.
