Ha Coggy. That is soooo old hat to me.

I'll explain. Many, many years ago, whhen I first came to Sheffield as a student, 1974 actually, I used to hitch hike home to Wales quite regularly on a Friday and hitch hike back on the Sunday.

Modus operandi was to catch the 69 Rotherham bus from Sheffield as far as Tinsley roundabout on the M1 sliproad, where Id wait for a lift. I always carried a a card with "WALES PLEASE" written on it in big letters. Usually Id not have to wait long before a British Steel lorry on their way to Wales would pick me up and 200 miles later drop me off 100 yards from home.

Well, one Friday the lorries mustve left early as there were no lifts being offered until a battered old small van pulled in after passing me and my sign. I ran up to the van to be greeted with 2 snarling rabid sheepdogs trying to get through the back window to me . Opening the passenger door the van was stuffed with bales of hay which held the dogs back. The driver, a scruffy old farmer says " tha' gonna Wales owd dook? , hop in" Well, beggars cant be choosers at that time of day so I got in, not looking forward to a long uncomfortable ride.

Anyrode, a few miles down the road and the farmer pulled off the M1 stopping on the roundabout at the top of the slip road. "This is as far as I go mate, Im going that way"

"Pardon" says I ...."I thought we were going to Wales?"

"Yes, well near enough, Wales is just darn theer, sithee" and oft he jolly well fooked leaving me stranded in the middle of fookin nowhere. Took me hours before someone actually drove by and gave me a lift to the Services where I eventually got a proper lift home!

Happy daze lol
