So. What do you guys reckon? Past or present, living or sadly deceased. Whose the greatest and, more importantly, why? I'm qualified to ask this question because of my much-publicised connection to Mick Doohan. No. Really!! Welll...... :? I did chat with his girlfriend in the traffic in Hampstead a few years ago :roll) Anyway.. whadd'ya think??

I would nominate Dave Jefferies no one i dont think will ever ride the TT
like this man did and win so many times, a very underestimated rider, who never got the break into the WSB teams that he so richly deserved.
unbeatable on the road and probably would have been in the top three in the world given a works team ride. :(

Mike "THE BIKE" Hailwood, Champion at Isle of Man. Grand Prix in all the classes he entered, Formula 1 driver, he didnt do too well in that but made up for it by winning the highest civilian bravery award of the George Cross for rescuing another driver from a blazing car then back to the Isle of Man after years away to show how it should be done and won again. Only to be killed by a fookin cage driver doing a U turn in front of him.

Dunno....

Presently I gotta give mucho respect to Sete Gibernua. The guy is superb.
Hero of tomorrow will be Makato Tamada....

But all time hero I reckon is Valentino Rossi, no-one has ever been able to ride like him...

Hobbs - Star for the future
The road is never long enough, and too many bastid cages.

Racers past and present

Postby Bobsilverbird » Mon Aug 25, 2003 8:54 am

Well as we all know these things are difficult to put into perspective as with technoligical advancements the playing field does not remain level so all my opinions are based on the man of the time.
Bill Ivy
Mike Hailwood
Joey Dunlop
Barry Sheene (So many wins on inferior machines)
Mick Doohan
Carl Foggarty (Yes iknow he is a pain in the A%^E now, but he could carry corner speed like no one else) and we are talking racers not personalities.
David Jefferies. King of the island
Valentino Rossi THE best to date, by a big margin.

For me so many riders have impressed. Jeffries and Dunlop - SO impressive on the island. Jeffries- too big to be THAT fast . Dunlop- too OLD to be that fast :banghead) . Doohan - mr. consistent! Foggy - Aggressive! Bayliss - persistent. Edwards - smooth and robotic! Agostini, Hailwood etc were true greats but, not having experienced their racing, I can only go on their records. Most recently I'm of the opinion that one man is showing masterful potential. I've been stunned as he's done things on a bike that I find impossible to believe. Even when he's off form he's fantastic1 You've gotta feel sorry for Max cos I'm with Anth on this one. Rossi for me 8)

1's to watch for -
Yukio Kagayama - BSB, WSB or MotoGP
Casey Stoner - Currently getting to grips with 125GP

Both future world champs in the making :thumbsup)

Definitely Kagayama Bris. Seriously fast, mad Jap. Reckon Hodgson's got a few suprises coming if he thinks he'll win GP within 3 years. Corser is only now starting to shine and he was FANTASTIC in WSB. Hodgson's nowhere near his stamp! If he's flustered by someone it takes him a lap or 2 to get it together again. If you did that to Corser he'd be right back at ya!!

Tough one because I have confussed opinions.

Nowadays it has to be Rossi

From the past Kenny Roberts

From road racing its a toss up between Yer Man (Joey Dunlop - who also had an XX) and David Jeffries (GRHS)

For the future, and he has been mentioned before - DENNIS HOBBS
This guy is currently leading the privateers in BSB and as far as I am aware he didn't even do the first three rounds - look out world another superstar in the making here - GOOD LUCK DENNIS
On the path to "Old and Wise" you must first be "Young and Foolish"
