Well,
I did notice that when I put the pads in, they seemed a bit tight, so I decided to remove the calipers again and inspect them (all this about Blackbird brakes being difficult to bleed is B***ocks, as long as you do it in the correct sequence).

The tab on the pad sits in a seat in the caliper. This seat is protected with a thin steel clip. When I removed this clip, there was a lot of corrosion between it and the caliper seat. (You know, that white powdery stuff). This corrosion had fractionally pushed the clip out of its seat and made the pad bind on the pin, and stopped it backing off when the brake was released. (Does this make any sense to anybody else apart from me).
Yes. OK. I know I said I cleaned the calipers before, but I didn't think to remove this clip.

I think this could happen to any bike, even a "HIYOSILVER".

Hope this is of some use to someone else.

95% of all Harley Davidsons ever made are still on the road... the other 5% made it home.
