Sigma bike speedo

Postby Simon S » Mon Jan 12, 2004 10:46 pm

Just installed a cycle speedo on the xx.
This is a great idea if you want to know how fast your realy going, or know the time your xx has been in motion.
It also has a peak speed indicator a trip counter, clock, avarage speed and some symbols to show you if you are above, below or making your avarage speed. :P
All that for £20 :D :)
What a Bertie bargain

And the problem with the original one was ?????????????????
Are you going to disconect it to show less miles on the clock.
Image …Ride carefully. It's not only bikes that can be recalled by their maker.

I have heard of cycle speedo not being able to accurately report at 150+ mph...I have read there are some that can...is yours accurate at the high end?..I have been considering one until i can afford one of those speedo fixers

Well quite simple realy.
First you glue a magnet to the bolt's that hold the disc to the wheel.
Then you glue the pickup from the computer to the inside of the fork leg, allowing a few mm clearance between the magnet as it passes the pickup.
Then you measure the distance the wheel travels in one revelution, thats about 1900mm on my D205's :sick)
You then convert that so it reads in MPH rather than KPH and you ready to go!
Each time the magnet passes the pickup (reed switch) it sends a pulse to the computer...the faster you go the faster it reads.
And the conclusion is as follows
Bird speedo Sigma speedo
30 MPH 29MPH
60 MPH 58MPH
90 MPH 86MPH
100MPH 95MPH

The problem with the standard speedo BA is that the standard calibration is quite a way out and it is set this way by the manufacturers as it is illegal to have a speedo which reeds a lower speed than you are actually doing.

For those that are interested here is the calibration data for both analogue and digital speedos. (Big thanks to Badger for this one).

I calibrated my speedo and found it to read approximately 6.5% higher than the actual roadspeed.

I think we covered all of this before the site crashed but here it is repeated for those who missed it last time.

Trident, is there any way of calibrating the xx speedo?
Any more info would be interesting :wink)

Think you might have to use a specialist company, but if you have a look at this thread you can alter the speedo to take into account any regearing you've done http://ixxra.co.uk/ipw-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=837 Don't know if they work by steps and therefore no good for what you want or if they are infinite. If they are infinite you'd have to calibrate it against a GPS or similar. It's worth it if you've changed sprockets and altered the gearing as the speedo is a fair way out but can't see the point if you just want to alter the manufacturers settings.
95% of all Harley Davidsons ever made are still on the road... the other 5% made it home.

As a direct result of all IXXRA xx members sticking rigidly to the UK speed limits, you could well be right CamelDungRidingBumBandit :D

But look at it from another point of view - we DID and DO still ride an xx , unlike the odd turncoat on here

I've got a "CAT EYE" wireless cycle speedo I use for my Vintage bikes. Speedos were not compusory until the 1930s.
On some timed runs, unless the speedo was an original period type, it has to be removed (Easy with the one I have). We have to keep to scheduled average speeds using Mile Stones and Mile Posts. ie, 30mph = 2 mins per mile, etc. keeps the old mind active, (plus counting the oil drips on the total-loss lubrication system sight glass, adjusting mixture and timing) but not in the same way as riding a BB at 150 mph :D
