can anyone recommend a tent and sleeping bag for touring on the xx?
something that will pack away small.
I have an eye on a coleman Avior X2 or a Phad X2

quite small when packed, they are two men tents so enough room for me and my luggage.

can't seem to find packed sizes of sleeping bags so don't know which ones will pack away small.

thanks

Ah, just been through this dilemma myself.

Regards a tent, I managed to fit an old two man tent of my wife's on the back seat, but prior to that working out I was looking at a Solace style tent - looks good for under £100 and it would fit in a decent sized top box. And they do two man tents also.

As for sleeping bags, I got myself a Snugpak Travelpak Extreme for £35 off eBay (very light and compact but warm) along with a Thermarest Trail Lite self inflating mattress for £35 off eBay (also compact and warm). Both will fit into a narrow pannier with plenty of room to spare for cooker, pots, plates, mugs and cutlery etc.....

thanks for the info, I don't think that the cold will be a problem as we are going to Italy (down as far as Naples) at the end of august so I might look for a lighter sleeping bag.
Argos have an inflatable mat for £10 with a battery powered pump for half price if bought together at about £4 which looks good, I just need to see the packed size of it.

Snugpak do a variety of warmth ratings - and most bags when rolled up will fit in the palm of your hand.

Snugpak

And if you get a pump for the mattress, don't forget spare batteries. Or take Tim and he'll inflate it with plenty of hot air :wink)

I would have suggested taking A-Garminator-J for pumping your mattress but I don't think he'd find his navel, let alone Naples...

If it is comfort and space look at a Thermarest, they are not cheap, but equally you do not end up sleeping on the floor when all your air...provided by Tim or otherwise has leaked out, also means you dont actually need a Tim, or pump for that matter.

Sounds like a great trip :)

looks like a bargain, when you pitch it do you put it up in one go? I am a bit confused about the "Pitch: inner first" it sounds like you put the inner piece up first then the outer shell second ?

Hi - Takes about 5 minutes to put up, it is in two parts, look on it as the tent and wind/rain sheet. It's like a tent over a tent. Did me proud in a F4 with 10hrs of heavy rain in Devon last year... :P

It's off to Spain in a few weeks. :) :) :) :) :) :)

Tents

Postby Jevo » Fri Apr 20, 2007 8:57 pm

Check out the Khyam Biker Tent, I got one after buying a cheap tent when I first started going to bike rallies. It was a false economy.

This tent is very quick to put up and take down, has plenty room for two and packs into a small enough size to strap on the back of the xx Blackbird.
