Costing

Postby drrummer » Thu Jul 08, 2010 11:56 am

Hi folks

I am currently doing a costing for touring Dublin to Almeria. It seems to be working out a lot more expensive than i expected. Maybe you lot can help me out.

Here is the listing.

Firstly, there is some gear I need to buy.
1. Luggage = €700
2. New gear = €300

Then there is the trip itself.
1. Ferry = €256
2. Fuel = €400

'Need' and 'like' are different things. 700EU for luggage is not the amount you "need" to spend.... but of course you may like to.

For me I got some throwovers for about 5% of that price. :-)

Liklihood is i will be doing some travelling alone, so therefore I want secure stuff.

Plus, are the throwover stuff waterproof and all ?

I got mine and they come with covers. Of course this only covers three sides (and a bit) and not the side closest to the wheel. So far I've been fortunate enough not to find out if they leak. If the weather was rough then I'd have the liners* in just to make sure.

* liners - otherwise known as black bin bags. :-)

Ha ha - yeah was thinking that. Insert stuff into bags first, then into panniers.

Any recommendations on what to buy ?

Hi drummer. Yea, have to agree with Scotty on this..NEED/GET AWAY WITH.

Plenty of good throw over panniers.

Mind you, there's also plenty of hard luggage about at bargain prices/second hand if you look about.

But if it's your first trip I'd stick with a pair of panniers ( got mine on e-bay and have been great)...no good spending a load on hard luggage to find out that touring aint for you is it

Or, for 700 e, I'll fookin carry ya bags 'round for you

Good luck. 8)

Ha ha !

Yeah, you can trot behind the bike, bags in hand.

I could get one of those scooter things all the auld ones attach to back of prams and buggys for the older kid in the family.

Anyhow, can you get 40+ litre bags ?

Try this link to a RiDE magazine roundup/test of throw-overs.

http://www.motorcyclenews.com/upload/Ri ... 20test.pdf

Gives a few options.

Cheers for the link.

At this stage, I'm thinking of strapping a spots holdall to the back of the bike and going for it.

God bless ratchet-straps.

Renntec rack is about £50 (I THINK), stick one of them on (2 minutes) strap yer sports bag to that---which allows you to strap a second sports bag to your back seat to double your capacity----- which you now need to fit all the duty free you're bringing me back for having this fookin stunning idea :wink)
Eliminate the impossible. Whatever remains, however improbable, must be the part you forgot to service.

If you are thinking of going the Rentec way, I think they are only rated to a couple of Kg loading, ie a small sports back. I used to have one on Betty but found that that was all it would practically take anyway.

Something that is very highly rated over here is the Ventura system:

Not cheap but very versatile and the bags go from quite small - handy for over-suit, lock & chain awayday type things to feckin huge.
