This is all about assumption.
Because of the way our brains work we build images in our minds of thing we have seen in the past. So when we see something very similar our brain ASSUMES it is what we have seen before.
It is quite clear then that our minds can betray what is really there.
What can we learn from this?
Never assume that because we know a particular road very well, that, because you KNOW you can go around the next bend at 80mph with ya knee dragging and pull a wheelie out of it as you hit the big power rev range that it is going to be the same this time.
You have ridden this road a hundred times and you know every bump and pot hole – the camber the grip etc etc.
But today is the day that your ASSUMPTION is like A BIRD IN THE THE HAND and a car has broken down just round that bend and you are now in big trouble, or the grip is unusually poor due to a thin film of diesel, or gravel has been dug out of the kerb side by a wagon – and the list goes on.
NEVER assume that because it was alright last time that it going to be alright this time.
Always ride so that you can stop on your own side of the road in the distance you can see to be clear. If you don’t then you are a fool and the consequences could be …….. well I will leave you to work that one out.
ASSUME nothing and read every bit of road with all the senses you have – including your sense of smell – ever smelt diesel?
