made a few calls today about me new 2720
and the guy said he had a bike and that was it :roll) couldnt get the fooker off the phone for an hour :banghead)
couple of points he raised with insider knowledge....
the quest 2 dont come with map software on a dvd..so you cant do your own routes then download them unless you buy the same software as is preinstalled in the unit..about 350 dollars :bigshock) :redcard
also it has the same processor as the quest 1 but has much more detailed maps and other bits to do so the unit is very slow..much slower than the quest 1

the 2720 dont have a battery pack so you need to use a mains adapter or power it from the car or bike in order to do anything with it..seems about the only down point tho as it does come with preinstalled maps and also comes with a dvd of the software so you can make your own routes etc and download them to the unit..and they are shipping with v8 software now which has full post code search..i found one today for 591 +vat and then this guy said he would do one for £390 brand new in the box :D

TOM TOM rider..well hello..the guy nearly fell off his chair laughing..they have loads of them back every week
the comapny that makes them are now on version 4 as previous ones are packing up left right and centre due to them not being rugged enough for everyday bike use

this is reefer central london reporting on the gps situation for jack tv..goodnight :wink)

 Thanks for the informative write up Reef. Seems like the 2720 is the one to go for (I'm considering it) but don't like the sound of it not having a battery pack. Who's the guy doing it for £390? Wanna share that bit of info or is it top secret?

Having been absent from this forum for a long time, it took me ages to read all the way through this GPS thread.
I have been involved with GPS Systems for many years. We fitted Trimble "NavTrak" GPS systems to military desert search and rescue vehicles in the early 1990s. I still have a 1998 Garmin GPS128 and a 1999 Magellen hand-held GPS315. OK, so I'm a Silly Old Fart.
Last year I went modern and bought a TT GO 700 for the missus and was very impressed (shocked) by the pace of development, detail and accuracy. I did hand make a mounting bracket to position the device below the top of her V*L*V* dashboard. (she's just a little over 5ft tall).
The old systems were always super accurate when registering speed in a straight line, does anyone have any statistics on the modern stuff?
In the past, have used the old ones to calibrate speedometers.
I am saving up for one of the latest devices but need advice on how to mount it on my 1926 Ariel, that has no electrics whatsoever, except of course the plug lead from the magneto. :oops)

I use a pocket PC with a home made mounting. It works fine but because the antenna/amplifier is a separate unit (magenetic mount on the tank) it requires a little wiring to set it up on the bike. I use the optimate plug on the battery to get the power via a auto accessary socket.

For sound I use a maplin round the lug'ole speaker (I have a second helmet with this built in). Used it to navigate loads of places.

CHRI xx As for your lack of power on the Ariel, I understand that GPS devises don't use acetylene power (what happened to backward compatability :-? ) so consider fitting one of these ...

Jack, no it's a 550cc single cyl side valve, one inlet and one exhaust.
In spite of popular rumour, I did not buy it from new, 1964 actually, when it was only 38 years old and I was only 22. :oops) :roll)

Le xx , you probably don't remember the acetylene powered boiler I made to power a steam turbine, driving a bicycle dynamo. No good for the GPS as it gave out only 6 volts. I had to revert to my trusty Sextant. A bit awkward when riding at nearly 30mph (dangerous wind buffeting riding no-handed :P ) but very reliable.

Hmmm, I will consult my "Fan Club" on that one as I don't want to spoil the originalty of my old bike.
Meanwhile, I had better just fit a modern system to my xx .

BS

IMHO I think the best GPS out there at the mo is the SP3. This unit cost over a grand when it first came out and now you can pick them up for peanuts, that's what makes them so attrctive!

The only downside to it is the data storage. These cards that Garmin used in the SP3 are small and expensive (still are) but with 2 of these 126mg cards, I did a tour of Normandy, up to Paris and thro Germany on the Castle route to Prague a couple of years ago.

The only reason I updated was to get the faster calculation that the newer units have and obviously the data storage is now the Compact Flash so you can fit all of europe on the 2GB card.

Nice one Les :thumbsup) your hooked now mate, just got to get your head round the software now :-)

Oh and I aint forgot. will be over soon :wink)
