its always been in the back of my mind (but hoping and praying it isn't)that the ecm might be dodgy. you have answered one question though, that they are plug and play..Thanks very very much for the advice i will sign up on BIRD and see what happens, and do I wish I still had my old 97 carb version...

The Bonnie ran beautifully till she warmed up and cut out completely. Then when cold ran beautifully until warmed up and cut out. I think it is something to do with the CPS breaking down under heat.
As I said very similar symptoms. to yours although yours does keep goingish.
I am sure in the manual there is a way to test it.
I am not saying junk it for the sake of it though if you currently have a spare you lose nothing by replacing it. In the Bonnie it was an easy job and its probably just as easy for the Blackbird.
On the Bonnie the CPS is known as a weak point.
Before I had the Bonnie no bike I had ever owned suffered from this problem. That does not mean it cannot or will not happen.
It is testable so test it. If I knew how I would come through and sort it for you but as I mentioned I am electrically inept.
