Whats the latest thoughts on oil?

Postby Simon S » Wed Jul 01, 2020 7:55 pm

Being one of the long term oldies on this forum I can remember many threads about not using fully synthetic oil in the bird for many a reason. But I see that many do, and I think i wan't to put Mobil 1 RACING 4T 15W50 in mine. I have always found the Honda gearbox a bit notchy, and since last change it has been getting worse. What do you all think, and what do you use?

Hi Simon,
Any decent 10w/40 Semi-synthetic oil is the popular choice.
If you like "Motul" oil, they do a 4T four stroke 5100, 10w/40 Semi-synthetic.( The "blaby biker" loves it ,and he reckons it's helped make his gear changes quieter !) Find him on YouTube.
Personally I use Asda's, or halfrauds, own brand of oil, & find either works great in my bird.( I commute about 55 miles most days) gear changing's pretty good.
Done my last annual oil & filter change end of march.
Or you could pay top dollar for a premium brand.
Regards Len.

Just one other thing Simon,
I don't recommend using " Castrol magnatec ", it'll make the clutch slip like crazy.

Hi Simon. I dont think anything has changed regarding opinions on oil usage over the years. Yes,there are some that use fully synth AND swear by it. ( mostly the Mericans from what Ive read). Most though, use semi synthetic and why not. Im with Len here, Halfords or whatever is the Offer of the Day AND regularly. (Cos she's worth it! ;) )

I have always used what Honda recommended, multi-grade , never had any problems the engine is still as smooth as when I got the bike. just make sure you change it every 8000 miles.

Think you mean 4000 Gruf.

For years I have been using the Silkolene semi-synth 10-40w, but M&P have good deals on Motul 5000 semi with pattern filters. So mine's been running smoothly on the new Motul.

regards,

Chris
